Obituary

Deaconess Sylvia Lucy Morton Claytor of Washington, DC departed this life on Sunday, June 25th, 2023 at home surrounded by her family.

Sylvia was born on May 29, 1937 in Washington, DC. She spent the majority of her life in the metropolitan area of the District of Columbia, and was affectionally known as "Ms. Sylvia, Luc, Wello, Syl, Ms. Claytor, and Deaconess Claytor".

Sylvia was a life member of First Baptist Church in Northwest Washington, DC where she faithfully served on the Deaconess board. She began her federal career in the OPM and continued to the NARFE headquarters. Thereafter, she began working part-time in retail sales which fueled her love for the clothing industry making her a real thrift store connoisseur. Her love for fashion and fierce culinary skills afforded her the opportunity to create personal shopping and private catering experiences for profit, "2 Sistahs".

Sylvia had a passion for giving to others without any expectation of anything in return. She simply enjoyed sharing her talents and God-given gift of creativity that was reflected in her life everyday. She also enjoyed writing poetry, collecting family memoirs/photos, and interior design.

Sylvia will be remembered for her love and affection toward others. She loved entertaining, sipping tea, and shopping for friends and family. She was an accessory fashionista and her wardrobe reflected such admiration for hats, sunglasses, and handbags of all styles. She was an expert cook, and her recipes will live on forever as "How did you make this" rang out from people all over.

Sylvia leaves to mourn her husband of 64 years, Donald Claytor; son, Anthony Claytor (Alice Goldring), two grandchildren, Anthony Claytor and Armin Hoes Jr.; three great-grandchildren, Aden Hoes, Andrew Claytor, and Andre Claytor; eight siblings, Harold Morton (Diane), Delores Claytor, Yvonne McNeil, Loretta Farmer (George), Robert Morton (Deborah), Otis Morton (Jerri), Mada Porter, Len Morton Sr. (Sheila); and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Sylvia was preceded in death by her daughter Wanda Lynn Claytor in 2004, with whom she will share her final resting place; her mother, Elsie Morton, and father, Robert Morton.

Sylvia knew no stranger and was always supportive through prayer and lending a listening ear. Her life has left a lasting impact on her family, friends, and the community. She loved the Lord, and believed she had a beautiful home waiting for her in Glory because He knew her name.

The Celebration of Life Service for Sylvia Morton Claytor will be held on Wednesday, July 5, 2023 @ 11 A.M. at Fort Lincoln Cemetery 3401 Bladensburg Road. Brentwood, MD 20722. She has requested that all women wear a hat.
