George Randolph Shirley, Sr. entered his well-deserved eternal rest on Friday, November 8, 2024, surrounded by his loving family.
George enlisted in the United States Army and served with honor, receiving numerous commendations, including the National Defense Medal, Sharpshooter Medal, Combat Infantry Badge, and the Purple Heart. Upon discharge, he built a career in transportation, eventually retiring from the Virginia Department of Transportation in 2002.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 56 years, Betty Jean Shirley; children George Randolph Jr. (Bowie, MD), Lavonia E. Bunkey Shirley (Fort Washington, MD), Michael Terrell (La Plata, MD), and Herschel D. (Fort Washington, MD); five grandchildren, one great-grandchild; brothers Archie M. Spruill, Adolphus H. Spruill (Loretta), and Joseph R. Spruill (Sandra); in-laws Henry (Ozella), James (Carolyn), and Freddie (Juanita) McDuffie; Barbara (Bruce) Lowe, Janie Spruill, and Georgia McDuffie; his maternal aunt Jean Reeves; paternal family Melba Spruill (Johnie), Shirley Rogers and Raymond (Mae) Spruill; and a host of beloved relatives and lifelong friends, including Robert and Brenda Jeter, and neighbor John Richardson.
