Joan Roach, beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend, entered into eternal rest on October 30th, 2025. She was born on April 18, 1946, in Washington, D.C., to the late Thelma O. Parks and John Valentine. Joan was the second oldest of five siblings and was raised in the nation's capital, where she was educated in the D.C. Public School system.
Joan devoted her life to caring for others, both personally and professionally. She worked for many years as a dietary aide at Howard University, where her hard work, compassion, and dedication were evident to all who knew her.
Known for her generous spirit, Joan was the kind of woman who made
everyone feel at home. Her door was always open to anyone in need—a place to rest, a good meal, or a good laugh. Her hospitality was unmatched, and her home became a sanctuary for family, friends, and neighbors alike.
She was formerly married to Raymond Roach Sr., and from this union
three sons were born - Raymond Jr., James Sr., and Lamont Sr. Her greatest joy came from spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who brought her endless happiness.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Thelma O. Parks and John Valentine; her sister, Jacqueline Jones; her brother, Joseph Smith; and two beloved grandsons, Jermaine and Jawon Roach.
Joan leaves to cherish her memory her three devoted sons-Raymond
Jr. (Keisha), James Sr., Lamont Sr. (Tia), honorary son Theodore Mayberry and daughter Sonia Seymour-along with her loving grandchildren:
Raymond III, Raylonte, Rayshod, Kamyle, Roman, Dana, James Jr., Darren, Jamal, Joanaye, Lamont Jr., Taylor and Jordan; and a host of great-grandchildren. She also leaves to mourn her two sisters, Mary Price and Joanne Smith in addition to relatives and friends who will forever remember her laughter, hand dancing moves and love.
Though she has departed from this earthly home, her spirit will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her. Joan's legacy of generosity and love will never be forgotten.
